No Surprises. Just a Clear Path Forward.
If you have been referred to a vascular surgeon — or if you called us directly because something doesn’t feel right with your circulation — it is completely normal to wonder what happens next. Vascular surgery sounds intimidating. In reality, most first visits involve a conversation, an examination, and quite possibly an ultrasound. Very rarely does anything invasive happen at a first appointment.
This page walks you through exactly what to expect when you come to Vascular Wellness Institute in Sarasota or Bradenton, so you can focus on asking the questions that matter most to you.
A little preparation goes a long way. The more we know about your history going in, the more productive your first visit will be. Here is what we recommend bringing:
Bringing a family member or trusted friend is always welcome. Two sets of ears are better than one, especially when you are taking in new medical information.
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. If your symptoms involve your legs — pain, swelling, varicose veins, or wounds — expect that the doctor will need to examine your legs and feet. Loose pants or shorts make this easier. You will not need to change into a gown for most vascular exams, but the exam room will have one available if needed.
We use eClinicalWorks for our electronic health records. If you prefer to complete your new patient paperwork on paper before your visit, downloadable forms are available on our Patient Forms page. Bring completed forms with you or arrive 10–15 minutes early if you plan to fill them out in the office.
Plan to arrive 10 minutes early if you are a new patient. Check-in is straightforward — you will verify your information, provide your insurance card, and complete any paperwork you have not already filled out.
Your appointment will begin with a thorough conversation. Do not rush this part — it is the most important part of your visit. Your surgeon will ask about:
This is also your chance to tell us everything you have been wondering about. There are no wrong questions.
After the conversation, your surgeon will do a focused physical examination. For vascular patients, this typically involves:
This examination is not painful. Your surgeon is looking for physical signs that confirm or inform what your symptoms are telling them.
One of the advantages of coming to Vascular Wellness Institute is that both our Sarasota and Bradenton offices have in-house vascular ultrasound capability. For many patients, a duplex ultrasound can be performed the same day as your initial consultation — which means your surgeon may be able to give you a complete assessment and a clear plan at the very first visit, rather than asking you to come back for imaging.
A vascular ultrasound is completely painless. It uses sound waves — not radiation — to produce images of your blood vessels and measure how blood is flowing through them. You will lie comfortably while a technician moves a small handheld probe over the area of interest. Most studies take 30 to 60 minutes.
Once the examination and any same-day testing are complete, your surgeon will sit down with you and explain what was found. This conversation is meant to be a two-way discussion, not a one-way announcement. Your surgeon will:
You will never be pressured to make a decision at your first visit. If a procedure is recommended, you will have time to think about it, discuss it with family, and get a second opinion if you want one. We mean that.
Depending on what your surgeon finds, the next steps may include:
